Left on Read: Start With the Question That Went Unanswered

An unanswered “Goodnight” and an unanswered “Are we still meeting at 7?” are different situations. The first may close the exchange; the second leaves a practical question unresolved.

Before interpreting the receipt, identify what answer you expected and whether the other person knew it was needed.

Fictional example: someone opens a message at work, then replies after their shift and confirms the plan. Compare that with several time-sensitive questions that receive no answer.

A receipt can show an app state; it cannot show attention, availability, or a reason. Repeated unanswered questions are a more useful observation than one delay.

WhatsApp text exports contain recognized messages, timestamps, and senders. Textopsy measures gaps when the sender changes and counts reopened exchanges after six-hour silences.

It cannot detect which message was read, how long it remained on read, or whether someone checked another app. Average reply time is a different metric.

If a practical answer is needed, ask about it directly: “Can you confirm by this afternoon whether we are meeting?” That communicates the need and timeframe.

For a wider recurring pattern, discuss communication expectations. Use the chat numbers to describe the pattern, rather than as evidence of an intention you cannot verify.
