Reply Time Calculator: Compare Average and Typical Gaps

Add one observation for each message and reply you want to compare. Enter both dates as well as times so an overnight response is counted correctly. Keep observations for one person together; mixing both people into one set answers a different question.

The calculator measures reply date-time minus sent date-time, then summarizes the valid nonnegative gaps. Average means total minutes divided by observations. Median is the middle gap after sorting, or the average of the two middle gaps for an even count. The shortest and longest show the observed range.

When the sender changes, Textopsy measures the minutes between the current message and the previous parsed message. It adds those gaps for the person replying and divides by their number of replies. Consecutive messages from the same sender are not included as replies.

Formula: average reply gap = sum of that person’s cross-sender gaps in minutes ÷ number of their cross-sender replies. The calculation includes overnight and multi-day gaps; it does not subtract work or sleep.

Three observed replies arrive after 8, 20, and 32 minutes. Their total is 60 minutes, so the average is 20 minutes. The middle sorted value is also 20 minutes, making the median 20; the range runs from 8 to 32 minutes.

Add an overnight gap of 720 minutes and the average becomes 195 minutes. The median is 26 minutes: the average of the two middle values, 20 and 32. The summaries now differ because the average responds more strongly to the long gap.

Fictional example: Alex sends “Free Friday?” at 18:00 and “Dinner?” at 18:05. Jordan answers at 18:20. Textopsy measures a 15-minute cross-sender gap from the most recent Alex message, not a 20-minute wait from the first question.

That rule keeps the calculation consistent, but it means the number is not a count of unanswered questions or read-receipt waiting time. Voice calls, missing messages, and replies on other apps are also outside the export.

Check the date range, the type of conversation, and whether both people tend to text during the same hours. An average from three days of chat is a different observation from an average across a year.

The browser calculator gives a median and range for the observations you enter. The automated WhatsApp report currently calculates a per-person average across recognized messages; it does not automatically subtract sleep or show a full reply-time distribution. Neither method measures feelings or availability.
